Weekend in South Texas

This past weekend we went to Crystal City so that Brian and Chris could clear brush at the ranch. Mom and I had a great time hiking while the guys worked. Both (little) boys were real troupers and we were able to hike and explore for 6 hours! I think we have a couple of country boys. :)

Heading off into the brush!

Kaydie & Jack appreciating some of the many beautiful wildflowers

At the creek with Kaydie. LOOK! There's water in it!!!
We stopped for a quick picnic lunch. Luke picked flowers while we finished eating......and Jack played in the dirt.

Quick photo op

Then back to the brush

Our littlest brush country cowboy

Observing the oh-so-interesting practice of dung beetle reproductionJack was most interested in watching the little beetles ball up clumps of manure and then roll it with their back legs while doing hand-stands (That's what it looks like, anyway.). Though no dung beetles were killed during this field study, two balls of dung were a total loss (and were temporarily stuck to the bottom of Jack's shoe). Based on the number of these guys we saw working, I don't think the population took much of a hit!

We finished our 6 hour hike with only one minor run in with a prickly pear, resulting in about 8 stickers which were quickly removed. After a few minutes of consolation he was good to go...until he ran straight in to some other stickery plant about one minute later.

Despite the stickers, and the fact that our rattlesnake hunt was a bust (Boooooo!), I had a great time with Mom and my sweet boys! Yes, it was a wonderful Mother's Day. :)

And Chris finally caught Jack!
